I Love You
- “I love you” is a word1 that holds my feeling
in what lies beyond the letters, beyond the lines. - Whenever I say it, sparrows in my heart
start up and flutter through the upper sky. - The pores throughout my body shiver, and give voice
to meanings that the unconscious hides. - In all my verse and prose I’ve given voice
to your radiant, stirring beauty, and nothing beside. - Your radiant beauty called, and my heart answered2,
clasping the full moon of all full moons to its side. - Your fragrance made it drunk; and in its world
it had never been given to any other wine. - And your breath, when it scatters a spray of scent
within my heart, is of all perfumes the most pure and fine. - “I love you” is a saying sweet to the taste;
I’ll say it again and again through all of time. - So did my heart carry its meaning through
to your heart? Or was it held up along the line?
