Each Day, a Splendour
- Each day, a splendour
more lovely than the last. - I'm drunk on your tender breath1;
your neck's sweet scent goes to my head. - Have I a share of beauty,
in whose shrine2 I worship, - and grow elated on its hills,
and glory in it, dazed and lost? - O breast of hers3, how can you
consent to be bound fast? - Give yourself free rein!
Set my heart ablaze, ablaze… - O soft cascade of silken hair,
let some of you… come down to me. - Princess of my heart, tell me:
have I a share, if only dew4?
Notes
- ʿAṭf is tenderness and affection; with a different vowel, ʿiṭf is the side or flank of the body. The unvocalised word allows both, so the 'breath' that intoxicates is both her kindness and the scent of her body, which the second half of the verse continues with her neck. ↩
- Atabattalu, 'I devote myself', is a word of religious devotion: to withdraw from the world and give oneself wholly to worship. Beauty is treated as a holy precinct (quds), and its 'hills' in the next verse carry a veiled physical suggestion. ↩
- The speaker turns from addressing the woman ('your neck') to addressing a part of her body, spoken of as 'her breast'. This shift of person (iltifāt) gives the apostrophe an air of playful daring. ↩
- Ṭall is the lightest rain, the dew-like drizzle, as opposed to wābil, the downpour. The Qurʾan pairs them in 2:265: 'if a downpour does not reach it, then a drizzle'. The speaker asks for even the smallest share of her favour. ↩
