Flutter, O Birds
- Flutter, O birds, above the clouds:
the expanse is boundless, and no veil stands in the way. - Mount the saddle1 of the open air in splendour,
that radiance may shimmer, flowing freely on its way. - Tear the horizon open with your songs, one after another,
and fill the air with sweet melodies. - And carry, with love2, my letters of longing
from my heart to the one who stays so long away. - Tell him of my anguish through the nights,
and of my burning, in the molten tears of passion. - Sleep has shunned my eyes, and I am grieved
that my beloved's home, once near, is now so far away. - You3 have drawn out your desertion of me so long:
what good, then, would bitter reproaches do with you?
Notes
- Ṣahwa is the saddle-place on a horse's back. The birds are bidden to ride the open sky as a rider mounts a steed. ↩
- Birds as bearers of lovers' messages are an old motif of Arabic love poetry, as are the doves and sandgrouse to whom the lover pours out his longing. Bi-l-hawā, 'with love', can also be heard as 'on the air' (hawāʾ), fitting for birds. The beloved is spoken of in the masculine, as is common in Arabic love poetry, whoever the beloved may be. ↩
- In the last verse the poet turns suddenly from the birds to the absent beloved and addresses him directly (iltifāt), as though the message had already arrived and the reproach could be spoken face to face. ↩
