In Your Chest

  1. She said, “Then hold my heart close to your ribs,
so you may give the heart its spring back, green as ever.
  2. Within your chest the world grows innocent once more,
and gathers up a heart that absence shattered.
  3. Hold close the loneliness1 I've kept concealed,
until I see my old fear melt to vapour.”
  4. And so I held her, and it was as if, in holding her,
I gathered up, from two lifetimes, all that had been scattered2.
  5. I felt the cold go out of my blood,
and heard a river break out in my ribs.
  6. She went back to arranging her hair, and smiled,
as if a heart within her face had come to flower.

Notes

  1. Waḥsha is loneliness and desolation, but also the wariness and strangeness of a wild creature that shies away from people; it suggests a fear she has long carried alone, as the second half of the verse says. ↩
  2. Mā qad buʿthirā, 'what had been scattered', echoes the title of the collection to which the poem belongs, Awtār Mubaʿthara, 'Scattered Strings'. Lamlamtu is to gather up, piece by piece, things strewn about: the embrace gathers into one the broken fragments of two lives. ↩
