Have Mercy1
- Have mercy, and mercy again1, O you who dwell in my heart,
for passion has pressed on me till I am crushed and oppressed. - The All-Watchful2 has granted you every grace,
and the heart has placed the whole of its reins3 in your hands. - By day I do not live a life,
and every night I lie awake and cannot rest.
Notes
- Ḥanānayki is the dual of ḥanān, 'tenderness, compassion', a fixed classical formula of entreaty meaning 'show me tenderness after tenderness', mercy upon mercy. The dual expresses repetition and intensity. ↩
- Al-Muhaymin, 'the All-Watchful, the Guardian over all', is one of the names of God (Qur'an 59:23). ↩
- Qiyād is the lead rope by which a camel or horse is led. To hand someone one's qiyād means to submit completely to their guidance. ↩
