My Longing

  1. If I could pour my longing into hearts,
I'd fill the whole world of lovers with love's wild craze1,
  2. and pour it out as wine for passers-by, to steal
    through them and set the marrow of their bones ablaze;
  3. and those who had forgotten yearning would be lovers in thrall,
    who'd savour sleeplessness and pain.
  4. I was made to drink your longing2, and there woke in me
what I had thought had crumbled to a wreck's remains.
  5. If only we two shared a single vein,
to water your ribs with dreams drawn from my blood!
  6. Since you've gone, I walk the streets bewildered,
and see an emptiness, though what I see are crowds.
  7. I hide my yearning, but the letters let me down,
and in the lines they keep on giving my love away.
  8. I'll carry on drawing my gladness from your love,
and drive the darkness off the morning's face.

Notes

  1. Hiyām is the most extreme degree of love, a passion that makes the lover wander about distracted, as if mad. The word was first used of a disease that makes camels wander in unquenchable thirst, which suits the drinking imagery of the next verses. ↩
  2. Ushribtu, 'I was made to drink', is the passive of a verb meaning to give to drink, and it also means 'to be soaked through, saturated'. It echoes the Qur'anic phrase 'they were made to drink the calf into their hearts' (2:93), that is, their hearts were steeped in it. His longing for her has soaked into him, just as he imagined pouring his own longing into others as wine. ↩
