With You
- How beautiful the world is when it is with you,
O you for whom I left my worlds behind, to follow you! - Even the morning, when I miss you, turns to night,
and night grows bright whenever it sees you rising1 into view. - My pulse, my tears, my heart: all these are witnesses.
Have mercy, now that longing has undone the man who's mad for you. - O goal of this heart worn down with suffering, I am
your lover: quench, then, a heart that brought such joy to you. - And when you fall silent, I can hear my poem in you,
and I forget the lines I had prepared to read to you. - I no longer ask my way in love:
for every road has learned to follow you. - I've sworn to love none other in my world but you,
and made my love-enraptured breast the spring camp2 for you. - So soften, and surrender to my love,
and give your hands to a lover who will never be untrue. - And lay your head upon this heart: to listen to you,
it has forgotten every wound it ever knew. - If hardship on the road has worn you out,
lay down here everything that has been hurting you. - And if you grieve, my soul will be a homeland
to hold your sorrow close and stem the tears that stream from you. - I have asked my time for no chance but this:
to wipe away the tears from your eyelids. - And rest assured that I was made a lover in thrall
to guard your worth in life, and raise you high. - So be pampered like a princess, always, in the arms
of an ardent lover who will never let your hopes fall through.
Notes
- Maṭlaʿ is the rising-place of the sun or a star. The beloved is pictured as a sun whose rising lights up even the night, while her absence darkens even the morning. ↩
- Marbaʿ is the spring camp of the desert Arabs, the pleasant ground where a tribe stays when the pastures are green. The abandoned camp of the beloved is the classic opening motif of Arabic poetry; here the lover offers his own breast as the camp where she will stay for good. ↩
