You Are My True Love
- You are, to me, my love that’s true,
come to dwell in this heart that’s loving you. - In my life no other friend remains
to keep me company but “I love you.” - Your love, so true, has left me free
of need for any bosom friend. - I had never understood
the meaning of love, exactly, through and through. - Once I took for love what never
was love at all, along my way. - Now today I’ve woken from
my delusion: understand me1, and wake up too! - I have no other love but you:
you are, to me, my love that’s true.
Notes
- Fa-ʿīnī is the imperative of waʿā, ‘to take in, understand’, addressed to the beloved: ‘understand me, take in what I say’. The verse pairs the speaker’s awakening with a call for her to awaken with him. ↩
