A Jasmine Morning1
- A jasmine morning to you, love of al-Amīn2,
with wafting scent, the fragrance of the jasmine, - anointing you3 this morning, as love’s sun
comes rising on the clear horizon’s line4. - Its rays keep you company, and speed to you
from us our greetings, and our yearning, intertwined, - for an embrace from you to heal these ribs
that longing for your tender breast has worn so thin. - They have no remedy but you: so heal them, then,
and shield them from the madness closing in.
Notes
- Ṣabāḥ al-full, ‘a morning of full’, is a popular Egyptian morning greeting. Full is Arabian jasmine (Jasminum sambac), a small, intensely fragrant white flower; the verse then adds yāsamīn, common jasmine, so the greeting is wrapped in two kinds of jasmine. ↩
- Al-Amīn, ‘the faithful, the trustworthy’, is the poet’s own name (Mohamed al-Amin). ‘Love of al-Amīn’ thus signs the greeting with his name, while the word itself also calls the lover faithful. ↩
- The plural ‘you’ (-kum) throughout is the plural of respect and affection used for a single beloved. ↩
- Al-ufuq al-mubīn, ‘the clear horizon’, is a Qur’anic phrase (81:23), where it is the horizon on which the Prophet (PBUH) saw the angel Gabriel. The echo gives love’s sunrise a luminous, almost sacred clarity. ↩
